Properties deemed unsafe by Code Enforcement mean a code inspector has determined that one of the following conditions is present, which endangers the public’s health, safety, or welfare:

  • Structural damage
  • Lack of utility service
  • Hazardous condition
  • Vacant and open structure
  • Unsafe gas equipment or appliance

Code Enforcement places placards on properties that are determined to be unsafe, which means entry is prohibited. Each month, the division updates and posts a Condemned Properties List that includes all placarded properties.

If it is found that a listed dwelling is occupied and no longer posted with an unsafe placard, any action should be deferred, or put off, until its status is confirmed with Code Enforcement. Code Enforcement is not involved in the sale or ownership of the properties on this list and does not release information regarding those matters.

Farm structures not used for residential purposes are exempt from the provisions of the Virginia Maintenance Code and are therefore not placarded.
